Rip high-quality MP3s in Windows Media Player 8
================================================ The relationship between Windows Media Player 8 and the MP3 audio format is widely misunderstood. Basically, WMP8 will be able to playback MP3 files, but encoding (or "ripping" CD audio into MP3 format will require an MP3 plug-in. So during the Windows XP beta, Microsoft is supplying a sample MP3 plug-in for testing purposes, but it's limited to 56 Kbps rips, which is pretty useless. However, if you have an externally installed MP3 codec, you can use WMP8 to rip at higher bit rates. But you'll have to edit the Registry to make this work. Fire up the Registry Editor and navigate to the following key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SOFTWARE Microsoft MediaPlayer Settings MP3Encoding Here, you'll see sub-keys for LowRate and LowRateSample, which of course equates to the single 56 Kbps sample rate you see in WMP8. To get better sampling rates, try adding the following keys (Using New then DWORD value): "LowRate" = DWORD value of 0000dac0 "MediumRate" = DWORD value of 0000fa00 "MediumHighRate" = DWORD value of 0001f400 "HighRate" = DWORD value of 0002ee00 Now, when you launch WMP8 and go into Tools, then Options, then Copy Music, you will have four encoding choices for MP3: 56 Kbps, 64 Kbps, 128 Kbps, and 192 Kbps. Note that you will not get higher bit rate encoding unless you have installed an MP3 codec separately; the version in Windows Media Player 8 is limited to 56 Kbps only. Find the appropriate location in the Registry... ...add a few DWORD values... ...And then you'll be ripping CDs in higher-quality MP3 format! Create a Shortcut to Lock Your Computer ======================================= Leaving your computer in a hurry but you don't want to log off? You can double-click a shortcut on your desktop to quickly lock the keyboard and display without using CTRL+ALT+DEL or a screensaver. To create a shortcut on your desktop to lock your computer: Right-click the desktop. Point to New, and then click Shortcut. The Create Shortcut Wizard opens. In the text box, type the following: rundll32.exe user32.dll,LockWorkStation Click Next. Enter a name for the shortcut. You can call it "Lock Workstation" or choose any name you like. Click Finish. You can also change the shortcut's icon (my personal favorite is the padlock icon in shell32.dll). To change the icon: Right click the shortcut and then select Properties. Click the Shortcut tab, and then click the Change Icon button. In the Look for icons in this file text box, type: Shell32.dll. Click OK. Select one of the icons from the list and then click OK You could also give it a shortcut keystroke such CTRL+ALT+L. This would save you only one keystroke from the normal command, but it could be more convenient. Create a Shortcut to Start Remote Desktop ========================================= Tip: You can add a shortcut to the desktop of your home computer to quickly start Remote Desktop and connect to your office computer. To create a shortcut icon to start Remote Desktop Click Start, point to More Programs, point to Accessories, point to Communications, and then click on Remote Desktop Connection. Click Options. Configure settings for the connection to your office computer. Click Save As, and enter a name, such as Office Computer. Click Save. Open the Remote Desktops folder. Right-click on the file named Office Computer, and then click Create Shortcut. Drag the shortcut onto the desktop of your home computer. To start Remote Desktop and connect to your office computer, double-click on the shortcut Instantly Activate a Screensaver ================================ Turn on a screensaver without having to wait by adding a shortcut to your desktop: Click the Start button, and then click Search. In the Search Companion window, click All file types. In the file name box, type *.scr In the Look in box, choose Local Hard Drives (C or the drive where you have system files stored on your computer. Click Search. You will see a list of screensavers in the results. Pick a screensaver you want. You can preview it by double-clicking it. Right click on the file, choose Send To, and then click Desktop (create shortcut). To activate the screensaver, double-click the icon on your desktop How do I get the "Administrator" name on Welcome Screen? ======================================================== To get Admin account on the "Welcome Screen" as well as the other usernames, make sure that there are no accounts logged in. Press "ctrl-alt-del" twice and you should be able to login as administrator! finally worked for me after i found out that all accounts have to be logged out first Fix Movie Inteferance in AVI files ================================== If you have any AVI files that you saved in Windows 9x, which have interference when opened in Windows XP, there is an easy fix to get rid of the interference: Open Windows Movie Maker. Click View and then click Options. Click in the box to remove the check mark beside Automatically create clips. Now, import the movie file that has interference and drag it onto the timeline. Then save the movie, and during the rerendering, the interference will be removed. Create a Password Reset Disk ============================ If you're running Windows XP Professional as a local user in a workgroup environment, you can create a password reset disk to log onto your computer when you forget your password. To create the disk: Click Start, click Control Panel, and then click User Accounts. Click your account name. Under Related Tasks, click Prevent a forgotten password. Follow the directions in the Forgotten Password Wizard to create a password reset disk. Store the disk in a secure location, because anyone using it can access your local user account Change Web Page Font Size on the Fly ==================================== If your mouse contains a wheel for scrolling, you can change font size on the fly when viewing a Web page. To do so: Press and hold Ctrl. Scroll down (or towards yourself) to enlarge the font size. Scroll up (or away from yourself) to reduce the font size. You might find it useful to reduce font size when printing a Web page, so that you can fit more content on the page. WinXP Clear Page file on shutdown ================================= WINXPCPS.REG (WinXP Clear Page file on shutdown) This Registration (.REG) file clears the Page file when you power off the computer. Restart Windows for these changes to take effect! ALWAYS BACKUP YOUR SYSTEM BEFORE MAKING ANY CHANGES! Browse to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE System CurrentControlSet Control Session Manager Memory Management and add the DWORD variable "ClearPageFileAtShutdown"=dword:00000001 You can also do this without reg hacking. Go to Control panel Administartative tools, local security policy. then goto local policies ---> security options. Then change the option for "Shutdown: Clear Virtual Memory Pagefile" Speed up the Start Menu ======================= The default speed of the Start Menu is pretty slow, but you can fix that by editing a Registry Key. Fire up the Registry Editor and navigate to the following key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER Control Panel Desktop MenuShowDelay By default, the value is 400. Change this to a smaller value, such as 0, to speed it up. Speed up the Start Menu (Part two) ================================== If your confounded by the slow speed of the Start Menu, even after using the tip above, then you might try the following: Navigate to Display Properties then Appearance then Advanced and turn off the option titled Show menu shadow . You will get much better overall performance. Speed up Internet Explorer 6 Favorites ====================================== For some reason, the Favorites menu in IE 6 seems to slow down dramatically sometimes--I've noticed this happens when you install Tweak UI 1.33, for example, and when you use the preview tip to speed up the Start menu. But here's a fix for the problem that does work, though it's unclear why: Just open a command line window (Start button -> Run -> cmd) and type sfc, then hit ENTER. This command line runs the System File Checker, which performs a number of services, all of which are completely unrelated to IE 6. But there you go: It works. Group Policy for Windows XP =========================== One of the most full featured Windows XP configuration tools available is hidden right there in your system, but most people don't even know it exists. It's called the Local Group Policy Editor, or gpedit for short. To invoke this editor, select Start and then Run, then type the following: gpedit.msc After you hit ENTER, you'll be greeted by gpedit, which lets you modify virtually every feature in Windows XP without having to resort to regedit. Dig around and enjoy! Forgetting What Your Files Are? =============================== This procedure works under NTFS. As times goes along you have a lot files on your computer. You are going to forget what they are. Well here is way to identify them as you scroll through Windows Explorer in the future. This procedure works under NTFS. 1.. Open up a folder on your system that you want to keep track of the different files you might one to identify in the future. 2.. Under View make certain that you set it to the Details. 3.. Highlight the file you want to keep more information on. Right click the file and you will get a pop up menu. Click on properties. 4.. Click on the Summary Tab (make sure it says simple not advanced on the button in the box), You should now get the following fields, Title,Subject, Author, Category, Keywords, Comments You will see advanced also if you have changed it to simple, Here will be other fields you can fill in. 5.. Next you can fill in what ever field you want. 6.. After you finished click the apply button then OK. 7.. Next right click the bar above your files, under the address barand you should get a drop down menu. Here you can click the fields you want to display. 8.. You should now see a list with the new fields and any comments you have done. 9.. Now if you want to sort these just right click a blank spot and then you sort the information to your liking Add a Map Drive Button to the Toolbar ===================================== Do you want to quickly map a drive, but can't find the toolbar button? If you map drives often, use one of these options to add a Map Drive button to the folder toolbar. Option One (Long Term Fix) Click Start, click My Computer, right-click the toolbar, then unlock the toolbars, if necessary. Right-click the toolbar again, and then click Customize. Under Available toolbar buttons, locate Map Drive, and drag it into the position you want on the right under Current toolbar buttons. Click Close, click OK, and then click OK again. You now have drive mapping buttons on your toolbar, so you can map drives from any folder window. To unmap drives, follow the above procedure, selecting Disconnect under Available toolbar buttons. To quickly map a drive, try this option. Option Two (Quick Fix) Click Start, and right-click My Computer. Click Map Network Drive. If you place your My Computer icon directly on the desktop, you can make this move in only two clicks! Temporarily Assign Yourself Administrative Permissions ====================================================== Many programs require you to have Administrative permissions to be able to install them. Here is an easy way to temporarily assign yourself Administrative permissions while you remain logged in as a normal user. Hold down the Shift key as you right-click on the program's setup file. Click Run as. Type in a username and password that have Administrative permissions. This will also work on applications in the Start menu. Software not installing? ======================== If you have a piece of software that refuses to install because it says that you are not running Windows 2000 (such as the Win2K drivers for a Mustek scanner!!) you can simply edit HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/Windows NT/CurrentVersion/ProductName to say Microsoft Windows 2000 instead of XP and it will install. You may also have to edit the version number or build number, depending on how hard the program tries to verify that you are installing on the correct OS. I had to do this for my Mustek 600 CP scanner (compatibility mode didn''t help!!!) and it worked great, so I now have my scanner working with XP (and a tech at Mustek can now eat his words). BTW, don''t forget to restore any changes you make after you get your software installed You do this at your own risk. Use your Windows Key ==================== The Windows logo key, located in the bottom row of most computer keyboards is a little-used treasure. Don''t ignore it. It is the shortcut anchor for the following commands: Windows: Display the Start menu Windows + D: Minimize or restore all windows Windows + E: Display Windows Explorer Windows + F: Display Search for files Windows + Ctrl + F: Display Search for computer Windows + F1: Display Help and Support Center Windows + R: Display Run dialog box Windows + break: Display System Properties dialog box Windows + shift + M: Undo minimize all windows Windows + L: Lock the workstation Windows + U: Open Utility Manager Windows + Q: Quick switching of users (Powertoys only) Windows + Q: Hold Windows Key, then tap Q to scroll thru the different users on your pc Enable ClearType on the Welcome Screen! ======================================= As laptop users and other LCD owners are quickly realizing, Microsoft's ClearType technology in Windows XP really makes a big difference for readability. But the this feature is enabled on a per-user basis in Windows XP, so you can't see the effect on the Welcome screen; it only appears after you logon. But you can fix that. Fire up the Registry Editor and look for the following keys: (default user) HKEY_USERS .Default Control Panel Desktop FontSmoothing (String Value) HKEY_USERS .Default Control Panel Desktop FontSmoothingType (Hexadecimal DWORD Value) Make sure both of these values are set to 2 and you'll have ClearType enabled on the Welcome screen and on each new user by default. Stop Windows Messenger from Auto-Starting ========================================= If you're not a big fan of Windows Messenger simply delete the following Registry Key: HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwar eMicrosoftWindowsCurre ntVersionRunMSMSGS Display Hibernate Option on the Shut Down dialog ================================================ For some reason, Hibernate may not be available from the default Shut Down dialog. But you can enable it simply enough, by holding down the SHIFT key while the dialog is visible. Now you see it, now you don't! Add album art to any music folder ================================= One of the coolest new features in Windows XP is its album thumbnail generator, which automatically places the appropriate album cover art on the folder to which you are copying music (generally in WMA format). But what about those people that have already copied their CDs to the hard drive using MP3 format? You can download album cover art from sites such as cdnow.com or amguide.com, and then use the new Windows XP folder customize feature to display the proper image for each folder. But this takes time--you have to manually edit the folder properties for every single folder--and you will lose customizations if you have to reinstall the OS. There's an excellent fix, however. When you download the album cover art from the Web, just save the images as folder.jpg each time and place them in the appropriate folder. Then, Windows XP will automatically use that image as the thumbnail for that folder and, best of all, will use that image in Windows Media Player for Windows XP (MPXP) if you choose to display album cover art instead of a visualization. And the folder customization is automatic, so it survives an OS reinstallation as well. Your music folders never looked so good! Album cover art makes music folder thumbnails look better than ever! Remove Windows Messenger ======================== It seems that a lot of people are interested in removing Windows Messenger for some reason, though I strongly recommend against this: In Windows XP, Windows Messenger will be the hub of your connection to the .NET world, and now that this feature is part of Windows, I think we're going to see a lot of .NET Passport-enabled Web sites appearing as well. But if you can't stand the little app, there are a couple of ways to get rid of it, and ensure that it doesn't pop up every time you boot into XP. The best way simply utilizes the previous tip: If you'd like Windows Messenger to show up in the list of programs you can add and remove from Windows, navigate to C:WINDOWSinf (substituting the correct drive letter for your version of Windows) and open sysoc.inf (see the previous tip for more information about this file). You'll see a line that reads: msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,hide,7 Change this to the following and Windows Messenger will appear in Add or Remove Programs, then Add/Remove Windows Components, then , and you can remove it for good: msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,7 MASSIVE FILE RENAMING ===================== A new, small, neat feature for winXP deals with renaming files. I personally have always wanted the OS to include a way to do a mass file renaming on a bunch of files. You can now rename multiple files at once in WinXP. Its real simple: Select several files in Explorer, press F2 and rename one of those files to something else. All the selected files get renamed to the new file name (plus a number added to the end). ASPI LAYER ========== WinXP does not come with an aspi layer. So far almost 90% of the problems with winXP and CD burning software are aspi layer problems. After installing winXP, before installing any CD burning software do a few things first: 1. Open up "My computer" and right click on the CD Recorder. If your CD recorder was detected as a CD recorder there will be a tab called "Recording". On this tab uncheck ALL of the boxes. apply or OK out of it and close my computer. 2. Next install the standard aspi layer for NT. Reboot when asked. Thats is. after the reboot you can install any of the currently working cd recording applications with no problems. If using CD Creator do not install direct CD or Take two as they are currently incompatable but Roxio has promised a fix as soon as XP is released. -note also see the aspi layer link at bottom NETWORK THROUGHPUT ================== may or may not work, depends on your configuration. add the Dword values shown below. increases the number of buffers that the redirector reserves for network performance it may increase your network throughput. the range is 0-255. It is set at 100 here. make MaxCmds & MaxThreads have same value. The default is 15 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTE MCurrentControlSetServi cesLanmanWorkstationPar ameters] "MaxCmds"=dword:00000064 "MaxThreads"=dword:00000064 as always - editing the registry can cause serious problems. If you don't know what your doing then don't do it. INTERNET EXPLORER TASKBAR PROPERTIES ==================================== WinXP will group multiple open windows (IE windows for example) into one group on the task bar to keep the desktop clear. This can be annoying at times - especially when comparing different web pages because you have to go back to the task bar, click on the group and then click on the page you want and then you only get one page because you have to click on each one seperately. I think the default for this is 8 windows - any combination of apps or utilities open. You can modify this behavoir by adding this reg key at: Change number of windows that are open before XP will start grouping them on the Taskbar HKEY_CURRRENT_USERSoftwa reMicrosoftWindowsCurr entVersionExplorerAdvan ced add reg_Dword "TaskbarGroupSize" modify "TaskbarGroupSize" entry to be the number of windows you want open before XP starts to group them on the task bar. A value of 2 will cause the Taskbar buttons to always group DNS CACHING =========== when you connect to a web site your computer sends information back and forth, this is obvious. Some of this information deals with resolving the site name to an IP address, the stuff that tcp/ip really deals with, not words. This is DNS information and is used so that you will not need to ask for the site location each and every time you visit the site. Although WinXP and win2000 has a pretty efficient DNS cache, you can increase its overall performance by increasing its size. You can do this with the registry entries below: ************begin copy and paste*********** Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTE MCurrentControlSetServi cesDnscacheParameters] "CacheHashTableBucketSize"=dword:00000001 "CacheHashTableSize"=dword:00000180 "MaxCacheEntryTtlLimit"=dword:0000fa00 "MaxSOACacheEntryTtlLimit"=dword:0000012d ************end copy and paste*********** make a new text file and rename it to dnscache.reg. The copy and paste the above into it and save it. Then merge it into the registry. BROADBAND ========= this is for broad band connections. I did'nt try it on dial up but might work for dial up. 1.make sure your logged on as actually "Administrator". do not log on with any account that just has administrator priviliges. 2. start - run - type gpedit.msc 3. expand the "local computer policy" branch 4. expand the "administrative templates" branch 5. expand the "network branch" 6. Hilight the "QoS Packet Scheduler" in left window 7. in right window double click the "limit reservable bandwidth" setting 8. on setting tab check the "enabled" item 9. where it says "Bandwidth limit %" change it to read 0 reboot if you want to but not necessary on some systems your all done. Effect is immediate on some systems. some need re-boot. I have one machine that needs to reboot first, the others didn't. Don't know why this is. This is more of a "counter what XP does" thing. In other words, XP seems to want to reserve 20% of the bandwidth for its self. Even with QoS disabled, even when this item is disabled. So why not use it to your advantage. To demonstrate the problem with this on stand alone machines start up a big download from a server with an FTP client. Try to find a server that doesn't max out your bandwidth. In this case you want a slow to medium speed server to demonstrate this. Let it run for a couple of minutes to get stable. The start up another download from the same server with another instance of your FTP client. You will notice that the available bandwidth is now being fought over and one of the clients download will be very slow or both will slow down when they should both be using the available bandwidth. Using this "tweak" both clients will have a fair share of the bandwidth and will not fight over the bandwidth.

XP - Slow Shutdown?
Some people have noticed that they are experiencing a really slow shutdown after installing Windows XP Home or Professional. Although this can be caused a number of ways, the most clear cut one so far is happening on systems with an NVidia card installed with the latest set of drivers. A service called NVIDIA Driver Helper Service is loading up on start up and for whatever reason doesn't shut itself down properly. The service isn't needed and can also increase the amount of memory available to your system. Here is how to disable it. 1: Go into your Control Panel 2: Select Administrative Tools and then click on Services 3: Right click on the file "NVIDIA Driver Helper Service" and then select STOP. 4: To stop this loading up every time you boot up your PC Right click it again and select properties - then where the option "Startup Type" is shown - make sure it is set at Manual. ___ Computer Won't Shut Down Itself After Installing XP There are a number of users who are noticing that their PC will no longer automatically power down/shut off without pressing the power off button on the computers unlike in Windows Me/95/2000. There could be a number of reasons for this - but the main one seems to be that ACPI is not enabled on the computer or in Windows XP. Here is how to try that out: 1: Click - Start - Control Panel - Performance and Maintenance - Power Options Tab 2: Then click APM - Enable Advanced Power Management Support ___ Boot Defragment A very important new feature in Microsoft Windows XP is the ability to do a boot defragment. This basically means that all boot files are placed next to each other on the disk drive to allow for faster booting. By default this option is enabled but some upgrade users have reported that it isn't on their setup. Start Regedit. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftDfrgBootOptimizeFunction Select Enable from the list on the right. Right on it and select Modify. Change the value to Y to enable and N to disable. Reboot your computer. ___ How to Display a Details Tab in Each Device Properties Dialog Box Windows XP can display in each device properties dialog box a supplementary tab named 'details' that lists advanced information about the current device that is mainly dedicated to administrators or developpers. To permanently display the 'details' tab in each device properties dialog box of the device manager, use the following method: Click Start/Control Panel, Double click 'System', Click the Advanced tab, Click 'Environment Variables', Locate the 'System variables' frame, Click New, In the Name label, type: "DEVMGR_SHOW_DETAILS" In the Value label type 1 and then click OK, OK and OK, Now in open the device manager, double click a device of your choice and look: you have a new details tab with tons of informations to dig in. ___ Disable Error Reporting As many of you would have noticed - every time a Microsoft program crashes in Windows XP - and Error Report comes up allowing you to send some information on the crash to Microsoft. Well this can get quite annoying, so here is how you disable it. Open Control Panel Click on Preformance and Maintenance. Click on System. Then click on the Advanced tab Click on the error reporting button on the bottom of the windows. Select Disable error reporting. Click OK Click OK ___ Never Re-Activate After Installation If you have to reinstall Windows XP you normally will have to reactivate too. Well not anymore. Just copy wpa.dbl after you activated the first time. It is located in the WINDOWSsystem32 folder. Now if you reinstall Windows XP just copy the file back and you're up and running again. ___ Make Use Of Your Windows Key (Of course, most of them work on all Windows) The Windows logo key, located in the bottom row of most computer keyboards is a little-used treasure. Don't' ignore it. It is the shortcut anchor for the following commands: Windows: Display the Start menu Windows + D: Minimize or restore all windows Windows + E: Display Windows Explorer Windows + F: Display Search for files Windows + Ctrl + F: Display Search for computer Windows + F1: Display Help and Support Center Windows + R: Display Run dialog box Windows + break: Display System Properties dialog box Windows + shift + M: Undo minimize all windows Windows + L: Lock the workstation Windows + U: Open Utility Manager Windows + Q: Quick switching of users (Powertoys only) Windows + Q: Hold Windows Key, then tap Q to scroll thru the different users on your PC ___

INTERNET EXPLORER LIGHTING-FAST STARTUP.
Isn't it annoying when you want to go to a new website, or any other site but your homepage, and you have to wait for your 'home' to load? This tweak tells Internet Explorer to simply 'run', without loading any webpages. (If you use a 'blank' page, that is still a page, and slows access. Notice the 'about:blank' in the address bar. The blank html page must still be loaded..). To load IE with 'nothing' [nothing is different than blank]: 1. Right-click on any shortcut you have to IE [You should create a shortcut out of your desktop IE icon, and delete the original icon] 2. Click Properties 3. Add ' -nohome' [with a space before the dash] after the endquotes in the Target field. 4. Click OK Fire up IE from your modified shortcut, and be amazed by how fast you are able to use IE! SPEED UP BROWSING WITH DNS CATCH. when you connect to a web site your computer sends information back and forth, this is obvious. You can do this with the registry entries below: ************begin copy and paste*********** Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesDnscacheParameters] "CacheHashTableBucketSize"=dword:00000001 "CacheHashTableSize"=dword:00000180 "MaxCacheEntryTtlLimit"=dword:0000fa00 "MaxSOACacheEntryTtlLimit"=dword:0000012d ************end copy and paste*********** make a new text file and rename it to dnscache.reg. Then copy and paste the above into it and save it. Then merge it into the registry. START IEXPLORER WITH EMPTY BLUE SCREEN. Set your default page to about:mozilla and IE will show a nice blue screen upon startup. SPEED UP DETAILED VIEW IN WINDOWS EXPLORER. If you like to view your files in Windows Explorer using the "Details" view here is a tweak to speed up the listing of file attributes: Viewing files in Windows Explorer using the "Details" mode shows various attributes associated with each file shown. Some of these must be retrieved from the individual files when you click on the directory for viewing. For a directory with numerous and relatively large files (such as a folder in which one stores media, eg: *.mp3's, *.avi's etc.) Windows Explorer lags as it reads through each one. Here's how to disable viewing of unwanted attributes and speed up file browsing: 1. Open Windows Explorer 2. Navigate to the folder which you wish to optimize. 3. In "Details" mode right click the bar at the top which displays the names of the attribute columns. 4. Uncheck any that are unwanted/unneeded. Explorer will apply your preferences immediately, and longs lists of unnecessary attributes will not be displayed. Likewise, one may choose to display any information which is regarded as needed, getting more out of Explorer. FIX IE 6 SLOWDOWNS AND HANGS. 1. Open a command prompt window on the desktop (Start/Run/command). 2. Exit IE and Windows Explorer (iexplore.exe and explorer.exe, respectively, in Task Manager, i.e - Ctrl-Alt-Del/Task Manager/Processes/End Process for each). 3. Use the following command exactly from your command prompt window to delete the corrupt file: C:>del "%systemdrive%Documents and Settings%username%Local SettingsTemporary Internet FilesContent.IE5index.dat" 4. Restart Windows Explorer with Task Manager (Ctrl-Alt-Del/Task Manager/Applications/New Task/Browse/C:Windowsexplorer.exe[or your path]) or Shutdown/Restart the computer from Task Manager. SPEED UP WEB BROWSING. Iv'e personally found a dramatic increase in web browsing after clearing the Windows XP DNS cache. To clear it type the following in a command prompt: ipconfig /flushdns. ALLOW MORE THAN 2 SIMULTANEOUS DOWNLOADS ON IEXPLORER 6. This is to increase the the number of max downloads to 10. 1. Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe). 2. Locate the following key in the registry: HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionInternet Settings 3. On the Edit menu, click Add Value , and then add the following registry values: "MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server"=Dword:0000000a "MaxConnectionsPerServer"=Dword:0000000a 4. Quit Registry Editor. IPV6 INSTALLATION FOR WINDOWS XP. This protocol is distined to replace the Internet Protocal Version 4 used by Internet Explorer it uses hexadecimal ip addresses instead of decimal example ( decimal ip 62.98.231.67) (hexadecimal IP 2001:6b8:0:400::70c) To install To install the IPv6 Protocol for Windows XP: Log on to the computer running Windows XP with a user account that has local administrator privileges. Open a command prompt. From the Windows XP desktop, click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, and then click Command Prompt. To set the icon of any drive (hard disk, cd rom or anything else) with a letter (C: etc.), run REGEDIT (Start -> Run -> regedit) Navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorer If one doesn't already exist, create a new KEY called "DriveIcons". Under this key, create a new key with the letter of your drive. I.e. C for your C: drive. To change the icon for that drive, create a key inside that one called DefaultIcon and set the path of (Default) to the location of your icon eg CDefaultIcon then (Default) = D ocumentsC Drive Icon.ico To change the name of that drive, create a key in the drive letter one (eg C) called DefaultLabel and set the (Default) to what you want the drive to be called. This is useful if you want to assign a long name to the floppy drive. CHANGING OEM REGISTRATIONS. Have you used someone's new Hewlet Packard with their OEM version of Windows XP? You've seen that HP has their own icon in the Start Menu, underneath Run, that goes to their Help Site. Now, you can have your icon that does anything you want (website, program, etc) and says anything you want. Basically, you are "branding" Windows XP (Home or Pro), great for if you are a computer builder and sell them, or you just want to make Windows XP your own. It involves Regedit. 1. Start up Notepad and creat a new registry file (*.reg) and copy and paste the following into it: Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTCLSID{2559a1f6-21d7-11d4-bdaf-00c04f60b9f0}] @="YOUR COMPANY NAME HERE" [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTCLSID{2559a1f6-21d7-11d4-bdaf-00c04f60b9f0}DefaultIcon] @="YOUR ICON HERE" 00,79,00,73,00,74,00,65,00,6d,00,33,00,32,00,5c,00,68,00,70,00,6c,00,69,00, 6e,00,6b,00,2e,00,69,00,63,00,6f,00,00,00 [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTCLSID{2559a1f6-21d7-11d4-bdaf-00c04f60b9f0}InProcServer32] @=he 2):25,00,53,00,79,00,73,00,74,00,65,00,6d,00,52,00,6f,00,6f,00,74,00,25, 00,5c,00,73,00,79,00,73,00,74,00,65,00,6d,00,33,00,32,00,5c,00,73,00,68,00, 64,00,6f,00,63,00,76,00,77,00,2e,00,64,00,6c,00,6c,00,00,00 "ThreadingModel"="Apartment" [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTCLSID{2559a1f6-21d7-11d4-bdaf-00c04f60b9f0}Instance] "CLSID"="{3f454f0e-42ae-4d7c-8ea3-328250d6e272}" [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTCLSID{2559a1f6-21d7-11d4-bdaf-00c04f60b9f0}InstanceInitPropertyBag] "CLSID"="{13709620-C279-11CE-A49E-444553540000}" "method"="ShellExecute" "Command"="YOUR TITLE HERE" "Param1"="YOUR FUNCTION HERE" [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTCLSID{2559a1f6-21d7-11d4-bdaf-00c04f60b9f0}shellex] [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTCLSID{2559a1f6-21d7-11d4-bdaf-00c04f60b9f0}shellexContextMenuHandlers] [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTCLSID{2559a1f6-21d7-11d4-bdaf-00c04f60b9f0}shellexContextMenuHandlers{2559a1f6-21d7-11d4-bdaf-00c04f60b9f0}] @="" [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTCLSID{2559a1f6-21d7-11d4-bdaf-00c04f60b9f0}shellexMayChangeDefaultMenu] @="" [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTCLSID{2559a1f6-21d7-11d4-bdaf-00c04f60b9f0}ShellFolder] "Attributes"=dword:00000000 2. Edit where it says YOUR ICON HERE to a path to an icon (ex. c:icon.ico), it must be 24x24 pixels and in *.ico format. Use double back slash for path names. 3. Edit both places where it says YOUR TITLE HERE to what you want it to say in the Start Menu (ex. Elranzer Homepage). 4. Edit where it says YOUR FUNCTION here to what you want it to do when you click it, it can be anything... your website, a local HTML document, a program, a Windows funtion, whatever your imagination can provide (ex. http://www.elranzer.com). 5. Save this file as brand.reg, double-click it to enterin your information, and refresh Explorer (log off/on) to see it in the Start Menu!! This works in both Home and Professional (and probably 64-Bit Professional) Editions! ORIGINAL WALLPAPERS. This is more of a fun tweak than it is useful. Go to run, type regedit press ok. when that comes up go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER>Control Panel>Desktop Now find the orginalwallpaper, right click and select modify. In the text box type the path to the file you want to be your orginal desktop wallpaper. DELETING My eBooks AND SPECIALS FOLDER IN MY DOCUMENTS. Click Start, then Run and type: regsvr32 /u mydocs.dll then delete them. REMOVE PAST ITEMS ICONS IN TASKBAR. Some times When you check your TasKbar properties or when you hide or unhide icons you can see old icons from Uninstalled or old programs you dont have anymore. This Tweak will help you how to get rid of this problem Thanks to leobull of Xperience.or How To clear the Past Items or Icons list in the TaskBar, perform the following steps: 1.Open Regedit Navigate to: HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerTrayNotify 2.Delete the IconStreams and PastIconsStream values 3.Open Task Manager, click the Processes tab, click Explorer.exe , and then click End Process . 4.In Task Manager, click File , click New Task , type explorer , and then click OK . LOCKING COMPUTERS. To lock a computer in XP, as you probably know, you press "L" while holding down "Windows Logo" key on your keyboard. However, if you would like to lock a computer remotely, for example via "Remote Administrator", you don't have this ability. What you can do instead, is to create a shortcut on remote computer's desktop where Target %windir%System32rundll32.exe user32.dll,LockWorkStation Start In %windir% ADMINISTRATOR IN WELCOME SCREEN. When you install Windows XP an Administrator Account is created (you are asked to supply an administrator password), but the "Welcome Screen" does not give you the option to log on as Administrator unless you boot up in Safe Mode. First you must ensure that the Administrator Account is enabled: 1 open Control Panel 2 open Administrative Tools 3 open Local Security Policy 4 expand Local Policies 5 click on Security Options 6 ensure that Accounts: Administrator account status is enabled Then follow the instructions from the "Win2000 Logon Screen Tweak" ie. 1 open Control Panel 2 open User Accounts 3 click Change the way users log on or log off 4 untick Use the Welcome Screen 5 click Apply Options You will now be able to log on to Windows XP as Administrator in Normal Mode. BUGFIXES. This is a strange bug in Windows XP Pro but it can and does happen to everyone. When you open the My Computer screen and your Documents folder is missing but all the other users folders are there try this tweak. STEP 1: START > RUN > REGEDIT > HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE / Software / Microsoft / Windows / Current Version / Explorer / DocFolderPaths Once you click the DocFolderPaths folder you should see all the user's folders. STEP 2: Add a new string value Value Name: your user name Value Data: the path to your docs folder ( ex. C ocuments and Settingsyour docs folder ) Exit Registry editor and open my computer, your docs folder should now be visable. MOUSE POINTERS. It seems that even without pointer precision disabled, the mouse under XP is still influenced by an acceleration ***************. This is especially noticeable in games. To completely remove mouse acceleration from XP, you will need to go into the registry and adjust the SmoothmouseXYCurve values. Here is how its done. 1. Click Start button 2. Select Run 3. Type 'regedit' in the open textbox 4. Open the tree 'HKEY_CURRENT_USER', select control panel, then select mouse 5. Right clicking, modify the SmoothMouseXCurve and SmoothMouseYCurve hexidecimal values to the following: SmoothMouseXCurve: 00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00 00,a0,00,00,00,00,00,00 00,40,01,00,00,00,00,00 00,80,02,00,00,00,00,00 00,00,05,00,00,00,00,00 SmoothMouseYCurve: 00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00 66,a6,02,00,00,00,00,00 cd,4c,05,00,00,00,00,00 a0,99,0a,00,00,00,00,00 38,33,15,00,00,00,00,00 If done correctly, you will notice you are holding a markedly more responsive mouse. HIDDEN WINDOWS XP ICONS. Windows XP Pro and Home contains icons for folders and files that cannot normally be seen, you can select to view hidden files from the folder options menu, but there are still some that remain hidden. You can set windows to view these files as normal hidden files, so that when you use the view hidden files and folders toggle from the folder options menu that these will be turned on/off along with the normal hidden files. These files are usually system files and should not be altered/deleted unless you really know what you are doing, if you don't yet still wish to change them I might suggest that you create back-ups of your system first. To view the hidden files you need to open up regedit, if you are not sure how to do this, select run from the start menu and type in 'regedit' without the apostrophe's. In the regedit window, expand out the groups by clicking on the '+' next to the name in the left hand column of regedit, and navigate to the below address. HKEY_CURRENT_USER SOFTWARE MICROSOFT WINDOWS CURRENTVERSION EXPLORER ADVANCED when you have clicked the advanced folder on the left pane, look down the list at the titles in the right hand pane, one of those titles is 'ShowSuperHidden' double click the title and in the window that appears set the value to equal 1 to show the super hidden files and 0 to hide them. XP HOME ADVANCED FILE PERMISSIONS. This is actually an addition to my previous post entitled "Get XP Pro file security with XP Home". In the aforementioned post I outlined how to access *Advance file Permissions* on NTFS file systems for XP Home simply by booting into *Safe Mode*, rt-clicking any file or folder, and navigating to the *Security tab*. This gives the user the ability to allow or deny read, write, execute, read & write, display contents, full-control, iheritance, and take ownership permissions, with many more options available to apply to different users and groups stored on the computer. Well, you don't have to do this in *Safe Mode* (XP Home). Although it is a little less intuitive, you can simply go to your command prompt - Start>All Programs>Accessories>Command Prompt. Now type "cacls" in the window (without the quotes). This gives you the ability to add, remove or modify file permissions on files and folders through the command prompt. Type "cacls /?" for help on different options and variables. You do not need to be in safe mode to use this so it makes it a little quicker than using the safe mode security tab GUI. Remember - this only applies to NTFS. Here also is a very useful link to find a lot of extras and tweaks straight from the horse's mouth - the Microsoft Resource Center. You will find a lot of very useful web-based extra's here, most of them left unknowing to the general public - such as, "Online Crash Analysis" - a site that looks like Windows Update but you can upload your crash "dump logs" (when you get those system or application crash error reports). Microsoft will then analyze the log file and tell you some more info about WHY the system crashed (ie. faulty hardware/software/conflicts, etc). FLASHGET :BYPASSING 8 MAX SIMULTANEOUS JOBS. Users of Flash get will notice that the maximum number of file splits is 8. This number can be increased by the tweak below: 1. Run regedit. 2. Navigate to [HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareJetCarJetCarGeneral] 3. Right Click -> Add String Value. 4. Name as MaxSimJobs -> Set the value as what ever number you want. After a restart you should be able to download with more file splits. OUTLOOK EXPRESS WINDOWS TITLE TWEAKS. Change the window title of Outlook Express to anything you want! In regedt32 and navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USERIdentities{EE383506-901D-43C6-8E40-9A61901DF7CC}SoftwareMicrosoftOutlook Express5.0. Add a new string key called WindowTitle and make its value the desired window title. Then close the registry editor, and restart Outlook Express (if it's running.) Your new title now shows up in the title bar! WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER 9. When installing WMP 9 it leaves a watersign on your desktop. You can easily remove this with: regedit: HKey_Local_MachineSOFTWAREmicrosoftsystem certificatesCAcertificatesFEE449EE0E3965A5246F00E87FDE2A065FD89D4 HKey_Local_Machinesoftwaremicrosoftsystem certificatesROOTcertificates2BD63D28D7BCD0E251195AEB519243C13142EBC3 Remove both lines and restart computer. CLEANUP STARTUP ITEMS IN MSCONFIG. Do you ever uninstall programs and they are still listed under startup items in msconfig? Personally, I found myself with 30 such items from old installs. Microsoft leaves you no way to clean up this list, but have no fear, I have figured it out for you. 1. Open MSconfig and click on the startup items tab 2. Open Regedit and naviate to HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Sharedtools/MSconfig/startupreg 3. Compare the list of registry keys under startup reg with their counterparts in msconfig. 4. Delete the keys which are no longer valid. 5. You've cleaned up msconfig. REMOVING SERVICES DEPENDENCIES. This will allow you to disable a service or uninstall it from your system without effecting another service that depends on it. Here's how you do it 1. After you have set your services the way you want them and you have disabled/uninstalled something that another services depends on, run "regedit" 2. Under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESystemfind the service that will not function, do to another service being disabled/uninstall (found in ControlSet001Services, ControlSet002Services, and CurrentControlSetServices) 3. Once you have found the service right-click on the string value, "DependOnService,"and modify 4. You should now see a list of services that it is dependent on. Simply delete the service that you have disabled/uninstalled 5. Restart your computer and your ready to go Disclaimer REMEMBER TO BACKUP YOU REGISTRY. ANOTHER WAY TO DELETE HIDDEN DEVICES. You can view and delete or modify hidden devices by: 1. Openning Device Manager. (I usually right-click on My Computer, select Properties, select the Hardware tab, then select Device Manager.) 2. Select View and check "Show hidden devices" 3. Hidden devices will appear below with the others and can be modified. HOW TO GET "My Briefcase" IN WINDOWS XP. go to C:WINDOWSsystem32dllcache. look for a file named "syncapp". double click it. an icon should appear on your desktop that says "My Briefcase". double click it. it will come up with this window that tells you how to use it. TURN NUMLOCK ON AT LOGON. NumLock does not toggle on by default (system-wide), even if you have it set in your PC's BIOS, because of XP's multi-user functionality. Guess Microsoft doesn't know everyone actually turns it on, which should be reason enough for what acts as "default"... Anyway, you can hack the Windows Registry to change this behavior, or run a script at logon to turn NumLock on. 1. To enable NumLock through the Registry: * Open Windows' Registry Editor (START > RUN, type "REGEDIT"). *. Navigate to HKEY_USERS.DefaultControl PanelKeyboard. *. Change the value for InitialKeyboardIndicators from 0 to 2. 2. To enable NumLock using a script, see this MS Knowledgebase article for complete instructions: http://support.microsoft.com/directory/ ... US;Q262625 Option 1 is the quicker method, but if you have more than one user on your system and one or more don't want NumLock on (stranger things have been known of), then option 2 is the way to go since it allows you to only attach the script to specific users. FREE DISK SPACE BY DELETING RESTORE POINTS. Start button-all programs-accessories-system tools-cleanup-more options. You will have the option of deleting your restore points. When your done creat one restore point as a back up. HOW TO REAL GET RID OF UNNECESSARY SOFTWARE to uninstall things like msn messenger and other hidden installs thru add remove programs, do this: find sysoc.inf (you might have to enable "show hidden files" and "show hidden/protected system folders" in explorer) and open it in notepad replace all ",hide" with "," (both with out quotes) which is easiest to do with the replace all command under edit then in add/remove programs under add/remove windows compnents and whole new list of things to uninstall and add are now listed (such as internet explorer) HAVING PROGRAMS RUN WHEN WINDOWS LOADS SLOWS DOWN YOUR STARTUP. There are two ways do disable programs that may be in your startup (like icq, messanger,) The easiest is to do the following: 1. start --> run --> msconfig 2. Click on the "startup" tab (furthest right) 3. Unclick any items you don't want to load when windows starts. The second is by deleting registry entrys, this can be done the following way: 1. Start --> run --> regedit 2. Navigate to : HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRun HKEY_CURRENT_USERSOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRun 3. Delete any entry's that you don't want to load up TURN OFF INDEXING TO SPEED UP XP. Windows XP keeps a record of all files on the hard disk so when you do a search on the hard drive it is faster. There is a downside to this and because the computer has to index all files, it will slow down normal file commands like open, close, etc. If you do not do a whole lot of searches on your hard drive then I suggest turnning this feature off: 1. Control Panel 2. Administrative Tools 3. Services 4. Disable Indexing Services DISPLAY MESSAGE ON STARTUP. Start regedit, if you are unfamiliar with regedit please see our FAQ. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionWinlogon Modify the key legalnoticecaption with what you want to name the window. Modify the key legalnoticetext with what you want the window to say. Restart. REMOVE PROGRAMS FROM UNINSTALL LISTS. Start regedit, if you are unfamiliar with regedit please see our FAQ. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionUninstall. Delete the folder of the program. REMOVE THE DEFAULT IMAGE VIEWER IN WINDOWS ME/XP. This tweak works in Windows Me/XP, I have not try it in Windows NT/2000 yet, because i don't have that OS, you can try it if you have. *This tweak does not work in Windows 95/98 To remove the Windows default Image Viewer, first: Click Start Menu Select Run menu Type "cmd", (for Windows Me, type "command") Then type "regsvr32 /u shimgvw.dll" to unregister this dll. This will stop it from previewing any picture that it support, e.g. JPEG, Bitmap, GIF.... * Before perform this tweak, make sure that you have the alternative Image Viewer installed in you windows e.g. ACDsee, FireGraphics... because once you do this tweak without that application, you can't open and view your image anymore! So, to undo it, type "regsvr32 shimgvw.dll" in command prompt. KILL THE SEARCH DOG. copy this to note pad and save as dog.INF then right click, install ;********COPY THIS****** [Version] Signature= "$Windows NT$" LayoutFile=layout.inf [DefaultInstall] AddReg = Reg.TestSection.Add DelReg = Reg.TestSection.Del [Reg.TestSection.Add] [Reg.TestSection.Del] HKCR,"CLSID{2AD1B782-53A4-4CDA-8A81-CD4DC6D716D4}" HKCR,"CLSID{47C6C527-6204-4F91-849D-66E234DEE015}" HKCR,"CLSID{68F2D3FC-8366-4A46-8224-58EFA2749425}" HKCR,"CLSID{AC1B0D5D-DD59-4FF0-93F8-A84373821606}" HKCR,"CLSID{FFAC7A18-EDF9-40DE-BA3F-49FC2269855E}" HKCR,"TypeLib{ECA4E801-17AE-4863-9F5C-AF4047AABEE0}" HKLM,"SOFTWAREClassesCLSID{47C6C527-6204-4F91-849D-66E234DEE015}" HKLM,"SOFTWAREClassesCLSID{68F2D3FC-8366-4A46-8224-58EFA2749425}" HKLM,"SOFTWAREClassesCLSID{AC1B0D5D-DD59-4FF0-93F8-A84373821606}" HKLM,"SOFTWAREClassesCLSID{B791A095-A4AC-4312-8894-5B7E8FF5B3CD}" HKLM,"SOFTWAREClassesCLSID{FFAC7A18-EDF9-40DE-BA3F-49FC2269855E}" HKLM,"SOFTWAREClassesTypeLib{ECA4E801-17AE-4863-9F5C-AF4047AABEE0}" ;HKU,"S-1-5-21-725345543-113007714-839522115-500SoftwareMicrosoftSearch Assistant" ;*****END COPY***** CLICKING * .AVI FILES ON EXPLORER CAUSING 100% CPU USAGE. Well windows seem to have a REALLY big problem when it comes to reading AVI files. It seems that when you click on an AVI file in explorer, it'll try to read the entire AVI file to determine the width, height, etc. of the AVI file (this is displayed in the Properties window). Now the problem with Windows is that if you have a broken/not fully downloaded AVI file that doesnt contain this info, Windows will scan the entire AVI file trying to figure out all these properties which in the process will probably cause 100% CPU usage and heavy memory usage. To solve this problem all you have to do is the following: 1. Open up regedit 2. Goto HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTSystemFileAssociations.avishellexPropertyHandler 3. Delete the "Default" value which should be "{87D62D94-71B3-4b9a-9489-5FE6850DC73E}" Voila! Please not that this will no longer provide you with the windows properties displaying the AVI file information such as width, height, bitrate etc. But its a small price to pay for saving you resources. CD ROM STOPS AUTOPLAYING/AUTORUN. And the AutoPlay Tab has disappeared in My Computer, Devices With Removable Storage, Right Click on CDROM, Properties. Solution: The service: "Shell Hardware Detection" has been set to Manual or Disabled. Go to Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services. Return this service to "Automatic". SHUTDOWN XP FASTER 1. Like previous versions of windows, it takes long time to restart or shutdown windows xp when the "Exit Windows" sound is enabled. to solve this problem you must disable this useless sound. click start button then go to settings -> control panel -> Sound,Speech and Audio devices -> Sounds and Audio Devices -> Sounds, then under program events and windows menu click on "Exit Windows" sub-menu and highlight it.now from sounds you can select, choose "none" and then click apply and ok. now you can see some improvements when shutting down your system. SHUTDOWN XP FASTER 2. Start Regedit. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Control. Click on the "Control" Folder. Select "WaitToKillServiceTimeout" Right click on it and select Modify. Set it a value lower than 2000 (Mine is set to 170). EASIEST WAY TO DELETE PREFETCH. 1. Open notepad.exe, type del c:windowsprefetch*.* /q (without the quotes) & save as "delprefetch.bat" in c: 2. From the Start menu, select "Run..." & type "gpedit.msc". 3. Double click "Windows Settings" under "Computer Configuration" and double click again on "Startup" in the right window. 4. In the new window, click "add", "Browse", locate your "delprefetch.bat" file & click "Open". 5. Click "OK", "Apply" & "OK" once again to exit. 6. Reboot your computer. SPEED UP MENU DISPLAY. When using the start menu the you will notice a delay between different tiers of the menu hierarchy. For the fastest computer experience possible I recommend changing this value to zero. This will allow the different tiers to appear instantly. Start Regedit. If you are unfamiliar with regedit please refer to our FAQ on how to get started. Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USERControl PanelDesktop Select MenuShowDelay from the list on the right. Right on it and select Modify. Change the value to 0. Reboot your computer. 16 COLOUR ICONS. If you select 16bit mode for graphics your icons will revert to using 8bit (16 color) icons. Yuck! Change the following registry setting to: [HKEY_CURRENT_USERControl PanelDesktopWindowMetrics] "Shell Icon BPP"="16" "Shell Icon Size"="32" Setting the BPP to 16bit will yield 65565 colors for icons. Make icons in windows appear quicker
In Windows XP everytime you open My Computer to browse folders XP automatically searches for network files and printers. This causes a delay in displaying your icons. You probably see the "default" windows icon and as you scroll it changes to the correct icon. This is how to stop that... 1. Open My Computer 2. Click on the Tools menu and select Folder Options... 3. Under Folder Options select the view tab. 4. Uncheck the very first box that reads "Automatically search for network folders and printers". 5. Click "Apply" or "OK" You should see a dramatic increase in speed when Windows displays your icons.

There might be a variety of errors at the other computer depending on the operating system. On the XP computer, in the Event Viewer / System log, there will be the following error: The server's configuration parameter "irpstacksize" is too small for the server to use a local device. Start Regedit Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\lanmanserver\parameters Edit the IRPStackSize Give it a value of 15 Reboot the computer Configure for Auto-Logon If you are the only person using the computer and what to have it automatically log you on, Start / Run / "control userpasswords2" - no quotes Uncheck User must enter a user name and password to use this computer Services You Can Disable There are quite a few services you can disable from starting automatically. This would be to speed up your boot time and free resources. They are only suggestions so I suggestion you read the description of each one when you run Services and that you turn them off one at a time. Some possibilities are: Alerter - Sends alert messages to specified users that are connected to the server computer. Application Management - Allows software to tap directly into the Add/Remove Programs feature via the Windows Installer technology. Background Intelligent Transfer Service - The Background Intelligent Transfer service is used by programs (such as Windows AutoUpdate) to download files by using spare bandwidth. Clipbook - ClipBook permits you to cut and paste text and graphics over the network. Error Reporting Service - Allows applications to send error reports to Microsoft in the event of an application fault. Fast User Switching - Windows XP allows users to switch quickly between accounts, without requiring them to log off. Help and Support - Allows the XP Built-in Help and Support Center to run. IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service - You don't need this if you have other software to create CDs. Indexing Service - Indexes contents and properties of files on local and remote computers; provides rapid access to files through flexible querying language. IP SEC - Manages IP security policy and starts the ISAKMP/Oakley (IKE) and the IP security driver. If you are not on a domain, you likely don't need this running. Messenger - Transmits net send and Alerter service messages between clients and servers. This is how a lot of pop-up windows start appearing on your desktop. Net Logon - Supports pass-through authentication of account logon events for computers in a domain. If you are not on a domain, you don't need this running Network DDE - Provides network transport and security for Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE) for programs running on the same computer or on different computers. NT LM Security Support Provider - Provides security to remote procedure call (RPC) programs that use transports other than named pipes. Performance Logs and Alerts - Collects performance data from local or remote computers based on preconfigured schedule parameters, then writes the data to a log or triggers an alert. If you don't need to monitor your performance logs, then you don't need this service. Portable Media Serial Number - Retrieves the serial number of any portable music player connected to your computer QOS RSVP - Provides network signaling and local traffic control setup functionality for QoS-aware programs and control applets. Remote Desktop Help Session Manager - Manages and controls Remote Assistance. If you are not using Remote Desktop you don't need this service. Remote Registry - Enables remote users to modify registry settings on this computer. Routing & Remote Access - Offers routing services to businesses in local area and wide area network environments. Allows dial-in access. Secondary Login - Enables starting processes under alternate credentials. This is what allows you to run an application as another user. Smart Card - Manages access to smart cards read by this computer. Smart Card Helper - Enables support for legacy non-plug and play smart-card readers used by this computer. SSDP Discovery Service - Enables discovery of UPnP devices on your home network. TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper - Enables support for NetBIOS over TCP/IP (NetBT) service and NetBIOS name resolution. This should not be needed in today's network environment. Telnet - Enables a remote user to log on to this computer and run programs, and supports various TCP/IP Telnet clients. Uninterruptible Power Supply Service - Manages an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) connected to the computer. Universal Plug and Play Device Host - Provides support to host Universal Plug and Play devices Upload Manager - Manages synchronous and asynchronous file transfers between clients and servers on the network. Volume Shadow Copy Service - Manages and implements Volume Shadow Copies used for backup and other purposes. Web Client - Enables Windows-based programs to create, access, and modify non-local files across the Internet. Wireless Zero Configuration - Provides automatic configuration for the 802.11 adapters WMI Performance Adapter - Provides performance library information from WMI HiPerf providers. Cleaning the Prefetch Directory WindowsXP has a new feature called Prefetch. This keeps a shortcut to recently used programs. However it can fill up with old and obsolete programs. To clean this periodically go to: Star / Run / Prefetch Press Ctrl-A to highlight all the shorcuts Delete them Go to top Not Displaying Logon, Logoff, Startup and Shutdown Status Messages To turn these off: Start Regedit Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\policies\system If it is not already there, create a DWORD value named DisableStatusMessages Give it a value of 1 Repair Install If XP is corrupted to the point where none of the previous solutions get it to boot, you can do a Repair Install that might work as well as keep the current settings. Make sure you have your valid WindowsXP key. The whole process takes about half an hour depending on your computer If you are being prompted for the administrator's password, you need to choose the 2nd repair option, not the first. Insert and boot from your WindowsXP CD At the second R=Repair option, press the R key This will start the repair Press F8 for I Agree at the Licensing Agreement Press R when the directory where WindowsXP is installed is shown. 1. Not sure of website address and want to try out all possible options ? Most of the computer users would choose to type less if they are given such an option. Problem is for many of us, to find that option itself is challenging enough! Anyway I am talking to those folks who don't have habit of typing complete domain names and want the computer/Internet to do the job. Here are some of the registry changes that can widen your search domain.. If in Internet options, Display result and go to most likely site or just go to most likely site is enabled, you can type only the domain root in the Address box and Internet Explorer attempts to locate the correct Web site by searching different domain types. For example, if you type "Microsoft" in the Address box, Internet Explorer searches the domain types in the Autoscan list until a domain name match is found (in this case, http://www.microsoft.com). By default, Internet Explorer searches the following domain types when the Autoscan Common Root Domains option is enabled:. .com, .org, .net, .edu To add a domain type to the Autoscan search list, add the string value "" with a value of "%s." and a string value "" with a value of "www.%s." (without quotation marks), where is the next available number and is the domain type, under the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/Internet Explorer/Main/Url Template For example, if you want to add the .gov domain type and there are already 7 domain types listed, add a string value "8" with a value of "%s.gov" and a string value "9" with a value of www.%s.gov. NOTE: The order in which Internet Explorer searches domains is based on the string value. For example, the domain type associated with string value 1 is searched before the domain type associated with string value 2.

2. Attention LAPTOP Users ! Do your eyes a favor, use Clear Type Fonts. Hi everyone! May be you have already realized the importance of clear type font by now. A new feature that must be a boon to all those people who are spending their life staring these monitor screens!. After years of research, it has been noticed that Clear Type Fonts are best way to prolong you Laptop computer experience. Windows XP comes equipped with it and you can change the setting to use Clear Type fonts. What is not so simple to do is to even change the Welcome (logon) screen to used Clear Type. I have got hand of a tip that might be of help to you installing clear type fonts at logon screen. Save following to a .reg file and import it in registry. [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop] "FontSmoothing"="2" "FontSmoothingType"=dword:00000002 [HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Desktop] "FontSmoothing"="2" "FontSmoothingType"=dword:00000002 For those of you who do not know how to use clear type fonts in normal session here are the instructions: Right click on at any free area of the desktop and go to appearance tab of Display Properties. Click on effects and check the box saying "use following methods to smooth edges of screen fonts" and select clear type.

3. Fine tune Internet connection speed: Tip on changing QoS parameter.
This tweak deals with QoS parameter manipulation. There have been some confusion as to what can be achieved in real terms by changing the QoS parameter. Microsoft has finally released an article correcting describing the behavior of QoS parameter. I am providing a link to Microsoft web site knowledgebase article http://support.microsoft.com/directory/ ... US;q316666. In brief though, this tweak would only work on QoS aware programs and rest of the programs would simply ignore them. Networking Quality of Service (QoS) refers to a variety of techniques that prioritize one type of traffic or program when these operate across a network connection rather than relying solely on "best effort" connectivity. Please click on how to change QoS parameter article using Group Policy Editor (GPEDIT.MSC).By default, programs can reserve up to an aggregate bandwidth of 20 percent of the underlying link speed on each interface on an end computer. If the program that reserved the bandwidth is not sending enough data to utilize it completely, the unused portion of the reserved bandwidth is available for other data flows on the same host. This default parameter can be changed. </td> </tr> <tr> <td> 4. Further fine tune Internet access speed: Tip on improving DNS resolution. Internet browsing is such an exciting and easy experience now a days that we have almost forgotten the amount of work that goes behind the scene to make this all happen. We only feel bad if we can't find something easily or have to wait for a long time (I have heard many people saying WWW stands for world wide wait not too long ago!!!) Well with changes in technology and falling prices we have far better hardware and software to do this job but fruits of fine tuning have always been great and would continue to remain so. One of the things that should happen before Internet connection would go through is DNS resolution.DNS stands for Domain Name Service. Even though XP does a fine job of handling DNS resolution, you may still gain by increase the DNS Cache size. To do this you would have to add following entries in registry. Save what is written below in say "dnstuning.reg" file and import it in REGISTRY but opening registry editor and going to IMPORT option from top menu. [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Dnscache\Parameters] "CacheHashTableBucketSize"=dword:00000001 "CacheHashTableSize"=dword:00000180 "MaxCacheEntryTtlLimit"=dword:0000fa00 "MaxSOACacheEntryTtlLimit"=dword:0000012d

5. Want to remove shared documents folder from My Computer window ? Microsoft has done a fabulous job in the making of Windows XP. But least to say, no two people are alike. Some of the default features that Microsoft thought was good may not be liked by you at all. I have read various newsgroups and chats and one thing I noticed is that some don't like my shared documents folder option. If you are one of that, here is a trick to remove it.Open registry editor by going to START-RUN and entering regedit. Once in registry, navigate to key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Explorer \ My Computer \ NameSpace \ DelegateFolders You must see a sub-key named {59031a47-3f72-44a7-89c5-5595fe6b30ee}. If you delete this key, you have effectively removed the my shared documents folder.
</td> </tr> <tr> <td> 6. Want to have more options in the Add/Remove program list ? All programs that are available on your Windows XP system are not available for removal. For example wordpad. I mean you don't want to remove wordpad from Add/Remove program list, but that serves just as an example. So why are some programs in the list and some not. Its not a game of Random numbers. There many a few unique methods through which we can control what appears on list and what does not. If you have installed Windows in C: drive , Go to C:\WINDOWS\inf (substituting the correct drive letter for your version of Windows) and open the sysoc.inf file. File contents looks like this: See the components that have word HIDE as second last item on the row. This hide tells system to not to display those items/apps in the Add/Remove program list. If you want to have this item in list, simply replace it with blank. I think you understand what am I saying [Version] Signature = "$Windows NT$" DriverVer=07/01/2001,5.1.2600.0 [Components] NtComponents=ntoc.dll,NtOcSetupProc,,4 WBEM=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,wbemoc.inf,hide,7 Display=desk.cpl,DisplayOcSetupProc,,7 Fax=fxsocm.dll,FaxOcmSetupProc,fxsocm.inf,,7 NetOC=netoc.dll,NetOcSetupProc,netoc.inf,,7 iis=iis.dll,OcEntry,iis.inf,,7 com=comsetup.dll,OcEntry,comnt5.inf,hide,7 dtc=msdtcstp.dll,OcEntry,dtcnt5.inf,hide,7 IndexSrv_System = setupqry.dll,IndexSrv,setupqry.inf,,7 TerminalServer=TsOc.dll, HydraOc, TsOc.inf,hide,2 msmq=msmqocm.dll,MsmqOcm,msmqocm.inf,,6 ims=imsinsnt.dll,OcEntry,ims.inf,,7 fp_extensions=fp40ext.dll,FrontPage4Extensions,fp40ext.inf,,7 AutoUpdate=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,au.inf,hide,7 msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,hide,7 RootAutoUpdate=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,rootau.inf,,7 IEAccess=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,ieaccess.inf,,7 Games=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,games.inf,,7 AccessUtil=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,accessor.inf,,7 CommApps=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,communic.inf,HIDE,7 MultiM=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,multimed.inf,HIDE,7 AccessOpt=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,optional.inf,HIDE,7 Pinball=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,pinball.inf,HIDE,7 MSWordPad=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,wordpad.inf,HIDE,7 ZoneGames=zoneoc.dll,ZoneSetupProc,igames.inf,,7 [Global] WindowTitle=%WindowTitle% WindowTitle.StandAlone="*" </td> </tr> <tr> <td> 7. How to verify XP software you bought is OEM/UPGRADE/RETAIL? I am sure we all have noticed Microsoft product marketing strategy. Whenever they launch any new product line, there are various flavors of it available right from day one. Some are given adjectives like UPGRADE version or FULL, others RETAIL v/s OEM and then of-course we have various categories of the product like HOME, PRO , SERVER , ADVANCED SERVER etc etc. Well ever wondered what you bought is same as what was advertised ? How to tell the difference. Here comes the help. Look for a file called Setupp.ini that is present on your Windows XP CD and double click on it and browse its content. There is a field called PID=. This PID is what would tell us exactly what we have got.First 5 bytes of PID decide whether (it is OEM or RETAIL or is an UPGRADE ) and last three digits determine what kind of CD KEY will it accept. Here are some of the typical PID values: Retail = 51882 335 Volume License = 51883 270 OEM = 82503 OEM

8. Group Policy Editor: Extremely powerful tool in Microsoft XP Operating System.
Have you heard of group policy editor ? This is one of the most powerful tool that Microsoft XP comes bundled with that most of us don't even know about. I recently discovered it by accident. Learn more about it at Group Policy Editor section of this site but in brief it can be used to carry out powerful customizations and performance tuning of your system. Go to START-RUN and enter gpedit.msc </td> </tr> <tr> <td> 9. Have tendency to forget passwords ? Want a solution that will help you get back in business ? Most of us have a common tendency of forgetting passwords. If you don't every forget anything, I envy you and this may not be of much use to you but for most of us, this may be a life saver. If you're running Windows XP Professional as a local user in a workgroup environment, you can create a password reset disk by following instruction as shown below: Go to START-CONTROL PANEL-USER ACCOUNTS. Then click your account name and further on in RELATED TASKS, click PREVENT A FORGOT PASSOWRD. A wizard would come up, follow instructions and you have your password reset disk ready. IMPORTANT NOTE: As it goes with things like password, make sure that you keep this disk at secure location else you risk tress passing with your user account. </td> </tr> <tr> <td> 10. Want to change font size of Internet Explorer content on the fly ? Do you know that font size of many of the web sites can be changed as per your view pleasure. Yea ! You know about it but do not want to take those additional steps. I hear you ! Here is a tip. If you have a mouse that has scrolling button then fond changing is as easy as pressing CTRL key and rotating scrolling button either towards you (to increase) or away from you (to decrease). Try it out. It works for me. </td> </tr> <tr> <td> 11. Start menu is slow in responding? Want to boost response time of start menu ? Windows XP is touted as a new generation of OS Xperience. No doubt about that but this experience come at a cost. Resources. If your hardware configuration (read CPU,RAM) is not upto speed but still want to boost response time of start menu, here are a few tricks that might help. Open registry editor by going to START-RUN and entering regedit and navigate to key HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Control Panel \ Desktop \ MenuShowDelay . Change the value (default may be 400) to 5 or 50 or even 0. This should speed up. If you are not all that crazy for shadowy effects, you can further speed the things up by going to DISPLAY Properties Window and from there to appearance and over there clicking Advanced command button and check off Show menu shadow.

12. Want to enhance Network throughput? Try out this tip.
Network throughput depends on a variety of factors and as such you never no what could be the bottleneck. One of things that we can try out is the network redirector reserves.Open registry editor by going to START-RUN and entering regedit and navigate to key [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanWorkstation\Parameter s]. One here, click on right pane and added following Dwords. Dwords are in hexadecimal (and value as shown below indicates that of 104, valid values are 0-255). Keep both values same. I think default is 15 or 20. This may help networkthrough put but there is no guarantee. Try it out. "MaxCmds"=dword:00000068 "MaxThreads"=dword:00000068 </td> </tr> <tr> <td> 13. 19. Having problem with slow boot time or is it taking long to resume ?
There are a variety of reasons why your windows XP system would boot slowly. Most of the times it this has to do with the startup applications. If you would like to speed up the bootup sequence, consider removing some of the startup applications that you do not need. Easiest way to remove startup apps is through System Configuration Utility (Go to START-RUN and enter MSCONFIG) and going to Startup tab and deselecting application(s) that you do not want to startup at boot time. If this works, great ! If not you can also look into SERVICES tab and possibly deselect WORKSTATION option and see if that helps.Want to know more about boot time and what Microsoft is doing about it ? Visit Microsoft web site on fast boot /fast resume at WHDC - Windows Hardware Developer Central Go to Download section and you would see a software called Bootvis.exe. It is Microsoft Boot Performance trace visualization tool and has option to optimize your boot sequence. Read my step by step guide to using bootvis.EXE. IMPORTANT NOTE: If you deselect WORKSTATION option from SERVICE tab and reboot, a warning message window may come the very next time which you can choose not be displayed by checking "do not show this message again" option.</td> </tr> <tr> <td> 20. What to do with "the system has recovered from a serious error......" error ? Whenever Windows XP encounters a problem (that it thinks is serious even if you did not do anything unusual) it creates a dump file. Next time you reboot, you most likely see this error message. Clicking on more information shows error signature and other clumsy details. Typically minidump would be stored in \WINDOWS\MINIDUMP directory. It is not so easy to decipher this information. Best thing to do is to go to Windows Online Crash Analysissite at Microsoft Online Crash Analysis and submit report ( or check status if you have already submitted the report). You may need to signon with Microsoft .Net Passport and if you don't have you may need to create one by supply some basic information about yourself.. Following are some of actions that you can take to avoid this error from cropping up. Temporarily disabling error reporting: Right-clock on my computer, select properties, advanced tab, error reporting button - turn on the "no error reporting" check box and turn off the "but notify me" option. Disable Virtual Memory: Right-click on my computer, select properties, advanced tab, performance settings, advanced tab, virtual memory "change" button. Note down the current VM settings (system managed or any customized size. Turn on the "no paging file" bullet, and press the set tab. Delete the paging file: Reboot. Verify that the option reads 0 kb for page file. Use folder options on control panel or explorer "tools" pulldown menu & go to "view" tab. Turn off check box to permit viewing of system files. Now explorer on the root of C drive (or what ever drive letter you page file was set to use), should show a pagefile.sys entry. Delete this. You will get a warning message about this being a system file. Since you have disabled virtual memory, this entry is not being used. Delete it. Go empty the trash bin to make sure this entry is cleared. Re-enable Virtual Memory: Right-click on my computer, select properties, advanced tab, performance settings, advanced tab, virtual memory "change" button , turn on the system-managed or customized paging file with the same settings as you noted down earlier. Be sure to press the set button. Reboot and verify that the paging file is active. Re-enable error reporting that was disabled earlier. Reboot to verify that the repetitive error message has indeed "left the building" IMPORTANT NOTE: Microsoft support team should contact you as soon as possible!

21. Installed Windows XP on the same volume as old OS?
I did this very same thing on my computer the first time I tried to install Windows XP Pro. Installation was carried out from within the old Windows 2000 environment and it did go well. I had chosen fresh install and ( that was the intention as I had bought a copy of WINDOWS XP PRO FULL VERSION and wanted to wipe out the old install...I do not believe in UPGRADE Versions!). But when rebooted I saw multiple boot option and soon figured out that installation did not go as I had expected.....To clean it I had to go into boot.ini file and delete entry corresponding to Windows 2000. Also based on my experience of old directory structure, I had to manually delete those. I could easily remove the WINNT directory as it belonged to Windows 2000. Difficult task was the program files directory as it has old as well as new stuff mixed up. I used date and timestamp sorting to figure out what was old and not needed but you be very careful here. IMPORTANT NOTE: If you remove a program file belonging to Windows by mistake, you may be heading for trouble !</td> </tr> <tr> <td> 22. NetMeeting does not open up quickly or not at all? I did face this a couple of times when inviting someone for voice chat on MSN. If you have recently bought/installed the XP PRO on your PC (which had been the case with me) you may not have activated netmeeting. You would have to do that. Quickest would be to go to START-RUN and entering CONF and in the resultant screen, providing basic information about your self and your are done.
