How to check if you are downloading fakes

*** How to tell if what you are downloading is what you want ***

Often I start downloading movies that are not quite what they are supposed to be. This is becoming more and more frequent and its very irritating. However, there is a way to tell before you spend hours getting the film that you want only to discover that its a fake.

How to tell

1. First, make sure you have the most recent codec installed on your system (this is so that you can actually open the files). Presently, we are on DivX 5.02 which you can download free from http://www.divx.com. Don't download the pro version as this installs spyware on your machine that also forces pop-ups (the annoying as hell gator ones).

2. Goto http://www.doom9.org and download the file called Divfix. We are on Divfix verion 1.07 at the moment, although I tend to find that 1.05 is more reliable in many cases. You would need to a http://www.google.com search to find the older version.

3. Go to your download folder and check for the file you want to check (will be currently downloading). It will start with INCOMPLETE_ and then have the file/film name. Copy this file, either to the same directory, or a new one (up to you).

4. Now check the extension of the copied file. If its a .mpg it will play without any messing, but if its a .avi you need to follow the next few steps.

5. Open Divfix and browse for the copied file. Do not use the file downloading as this will make it stop working from the point that you fix it (i.e. any further downloading will be pointless).

6. Open the copied file (usually starts with copy of INCOMPLETE_). Choose 'rebuild index' and the program will re-key the file.

7. Double click on the copy of movie and it will now play.

This should stop fakes, bad quality copies, etc becoming a plague of our beloved WinMX.

If you come across a fake file, please put the name below with the full movie byte length and what the film actually is. Allow anyone who queues this file to download it and lets irradicate the fakes for good.
